The goal is to seek repentance in a spirit of kindness. We need to pray both for the individual and for ourselves. We need to go not in anger but in humility desiring that our brother respond to the Lord in humility and confession. May God help us all when faced with making such decisions.
But ten hours a week for sermon preparation and teaching/preaching is not enough. In fact, this church had missed the emphasis of the following two passages.
If the pastor or elder does continue in sin, then the elders of the church must remove that elder from office. The last part of verse 20 says,
Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me . . . Jeremiah 9:23-24
The most important duty of a pastor is to work hard at preaching and teaching. By his sermons and ministro his teaching, he shows his love for God and for the congregation. It will be obvious in the messages a pastor preaches when he is not growing in his walk with God and is not spending many hours in scripture. The apostles did not have time for administration and neither do pastors today.
The passage says that if the elder does not stop sinning, he is to be rebuked in front of the congregation. At this point, it is implied that the elder is removed from office. Notice that the passage does not say this is the exclusive responsibility of the elders. But it is implied that elders are responsible for performing this action due to Hebrews 13:17.
From a practical point of view, an unbelieving wife will be a discouragement and will “wear down” a pastor or an elder. Rebellious children would reflect on him. How can a man serve God when his entire family is rebellious—spiritually and practically?
Third, most young men are idealistic in their thinking, and the tempering of time has not yet occurred. Some men, young and old, like a good fight. Once they are convinced how things should be done, they are willing to fight with others in order to win.
What are the pastor’s duties to a church? From God’s viewpoint every pastor is an elder and every elder has a pastor’s heart. This is an important biblical truth because scripture recognizes men who are not in “full-time” ministry to be pastors too. In fact, any male who satisfies the qualifications of an elder is an elder.
1 Timothy 5:19 requires that two or three individuals were witnesses to the same sin at the same time. This does not mean that one individual witnessed a sin one day, another person witnessed a sin on some another occasion, and maybe a third person witnessed another sin.
